About The Build Calc
Independent · free · thebuildcalc.com
The Build Calc is a free, independent collection of construction and home-improvement material calculators. Our goal is simple: help homeowners, DIYers, and trade pros figure out exactly how much material a job needs — concrete, shingles, insulation, tile, siding, flooring, pavers, drywall, and more — without guesswork, sign-ups, or paywalls.
How the calculators work
Every calculator is built on the standard formulas the building trades actually use — slab volume, roof slope multipliers, coverage per bag or box, and so on. We show the formula and a worked example on each page so you can check the math yourself rather than trust a black box.
- Standard methods. Concrete is figured by volume and converted to cubic yards and bag counts at published bag yields; roofing uses the pitch slope multiplier; insulation uses manufacturer coverage at the target R-value; tile, flooring, and siding use coverage-per-unit with a waste allowance.
- Adjustable waste. Most pages include a waste/overage field (10% is typical) so you can match your layout — more for cut-up or diagonal jobs, less for simple rectangles.
- Cost estimates. Where shown, costs are planning ranges based on typical 2026 US material prices. They are starting points for a budget, not quotes.
Estimates, not quotes
Material quantities and especially prices vary by product, region, supplier, and season. Always confirm against your own measurements and a local supplier or contractor before you order or build. See our Terms & Disclaimer for the full disclaimer.
