How do I measure my roof pitch for the calculator?
Roof pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run. In the attic, hold a level horizontally against the underside of a rafter, mark 12 inches out along the level, then measure straight down from that mark to the rafter; that vertical distance is your rise. A 4/12 pitch rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of run. From the exterior, you can read pitch directly with a speed square laid against the roof surface.
What is the difference between exposed-fastener and standing-seam metal roofing?
Exposed-fastener panels (corrugated, ribbed, or R/PBR panel) are screwed directly through the face of the panel into the deck or purlins, usually in 26 or 29 gauge. They cost less to buy and install but need periodic screw re-tightening as the rubber washers age. Standing-seam panels use heavier 24-gauge steel and hidden clips at the seams, with no fasteners penetrating the panel surface; that nearly eliminates leak points and extends service life, at a meaningfully higher material and labor cost.
Can I install metal roofing directly over existing shingles?
In many US jurisdictions you can install metal over one layer of existing asphalt shingles, which saves tear-off cost. However, codes vary; some require a full tear-off, and some manufacturers void warranties unless panels go over solid decking or a vented batten air gap rather than directly on bumpy shingles.
